New Tool for Online Job Searches

Indianapolis, IN (PRWeb) January 22, 2007 -- The new year is here and many people are beginning to face their New Year's resolutions. Each year, surveys find that one of the top ten most popular resolutions of people is to get a better job. Yet for many, it's a resolution that is difficult to keep. Job searches can be frustrating, humbling and last for months before showing signs of success. However, finding a new job--let alone upholding a New Year's resolution--doesn't have to be a disgruntling or lengthy task.

Career expert and best-selling author Michael Farr believes the key to quickly landing a new job is for people to treat their search as though it too is a job. This means one or two hours of job searching every day won't cut it. Job seekers must spend the majority of their day concentrating on their job search as though it were a paid position with real consequences and rewards.

"It's important for people to stick to a schedule during their job search, because for every day lost during someone's search, they can expect to spend at least two more days still looking for a job," says Farr.

Too often, however, people believe they are being productive in their job search because they spend countless hours on the Internet, searching dozens of Web sites for job postings. In doing this, job seekers actually make two mistakes that could cost them an opportunity to interview for the job of their dreams. First, relying on a few Web sites to generate job leads ensures that job seekers are missing out on hundreds of opportunities that are offered on other Web sites; in the newspaper; or through acquaintances, family and friends. Second, if someone devotes their entire day to job searching on the Internet, they neglect other essential job search strategies such as networking.

Fortunately, there is a little-known, but powerful way job seekers can scour hundreds of job postings on the Web within minutes, leaving them plenty of time each day to concentrate on other job search strategies. Richard Beatty, author of The Ultimate Job Search, offers tips in his book to cut a job seeker's search time by 75 percent. One of his tips encourages job seekers to take advantage of job aggregators, which are Web sites such as Indeed.com, Simplyhired.com and Jobster.com. Aggregators like these use RSS news feeds to automatically update registered job seekers on new job postings appearing all over the Web as soon as they are posted.

"These aggregators scrape job content from thousands of Internet Web sites including major job boards, niche job boards, employer's Web sites, newspaper want ads, search firm online listings, and so on, based on the key words you supply. Aggregators automatically bring these job listings back to you based on your personal job search criteria," says Beatty.

"You can only begin to imagine the huge time savings and efficiency these new, Internet based tools have brought to the job seeker. What could have taken days, if not months, to accomplish by manually registering and scrolling through Web sites, now takes a matter of seconds. Aggregators are commonly updated about every hour, so you will receive these job listings almost as soon as they are posted on the Internet."

The Ultimate Job Search is available at all major bookstores and from the publisher (www.jist.com or 1.800.648.JIST). For a free media copy or to interview the author, contact Natalie Ostrom.
